Arcs of Gray Art Quilt
Shades of gray curves are the focus in this minimalist, modernist aesthetic art quilt. The artwork consists of a composition of geometric shapes and curved forms in a monochromatic palette of black, white, and varying shades of gray. The overlapping arch-like shapes bring depth and dimensionality based on value. The texture of the surface shows fine vertical lines, adding a tactile dimension to the abstract composition. The overall effect is a harmonious balance between solid forms, linear patterns, and subtle shades of gray.
After hand cutting pieces of solid colored fabric, designing the composition, and sewing the pieces together I layered the quilt top with cotton batting and stitched many closely-spaced lines through the layers to add texture. This is called matchstick quilting.
I finished it with a sewn facing giving the quilt frameless straight edges. On the back of the quilt I sewed a fabric sleeve which holds a wooden slat (Included). The slat has a small eyebolt at each end so you can hang the quilt on the wall with two nails. The slat is slightly narrower than the quilt so the slat and nails won’t be visible when the quilt is hung on the wall.
