Detour Art Quilt
A deeply curved hot pink squiggle courses through the tilted acid lime cube-like object, leaving a dark void as its path takes a detour, seemingly cutting the object in two.
At nearly 8’ square the quilt envelops the viewer.
I cut those deep curves freehand and it is all pieced - there is no appliqué. The dark background includes black fabrics of different intensities, some flat, some glowing, in order to bring a lot of depth.
After hand cutting pieces of solid colored fabric, designing the composition, and sewing the pieces together I layered the quilt top with cotton batting and stitched many closely-spaced lines through the layers to add texture. This is called matchstick quilting.
I finished it with a sewn facing giving the quilt frameless straight edges. On the back of the quilt I sewed a fabric sleeve which holds a wooden slat (Included). The slat has a small eyebolt at each end so you can hang the quilt on the wall with two nails. The slat is slightly narrower than the quilt so the slat and nails won’t be visible when the quilt is hung on the wall.
