Los Angeles River Heartbeat Art Quilt

$5,000.00 USD

The LA River watershed should be a life giving force that nourishes plants, animals and the human spirit of Angelenos. But like a coronary blockage, the river’s concrete lining and pollution from industrial and agricultural chemicals throughout the watershed have damaged the life of the river. I created the river and its tributaries in red to visualize the similarities between the condition of our river and a heart attack.

After hand cutting pieces of solid colored fabric, designing the composition, and sewing the pieces together I layered the quilt top with cotton batting and stitched many closely-spaced lines through the layers to add texture. This is called matchstick quilting.

I finished it with a sewn facing giving the quilt frameless straight edges. On the back of the quilt I sewed a fabric sleeve which holds a wooden slat (Included). The slat has a small eyebolt at each end so you can hang the quilt on the wall with two nails. The slat is slightly narrower than the quilt so the slat and nails won’t be visible when the quilt is hung on the wall.

84” wide x 84” high
