Left Turn Art Quilt
The maze of life has many twists and turns, pathways and road blocks. It's easier to make right turns, but sometimes you have to turn left.
I used red and white based on my love for traditional American red and white quilts, but added many varieties of each color to add depth.
The improvisational cutting, design and piecing give a nod to some traditional quilt blocks, but the key to the design is the use of negative space or figure/ground tension to confuse what's important and hold the viewer's interest.
After hand cutting pieces of solid colored fabric, designing the composition, and sewing the pieces together I layered the quilt top with cotton batting and stitched many closely-spaced lines through the layers to add texture. This is called matchstick quilting.
I finished it with a sewn facing giving the quilt frameless straight edges. On the back of the quilt I sewed a fabric sleeve which holds a wooden slat (Included). The slat has a small eyebolt at each end so you can hang the quilt on the wall with two nails. The slat is slightly narrower than the quilt so the slat and nails won’t be visible when the quilt is hung on the wall.
